What is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty (or a “nose job”) is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose and nasal structures. People consider rhinoplasty for a number of reasons, like enhancing facial harmony or improving breathing functions. Rhinoplasty is one of the most frequently performed plastic and reconstructive surgeries in the world. The Rhinoplasty Society® is a professional organization that wants to educate potential patients on the fundamentals of rhinoplasty and pair individuals with board-certified surgeons who are specially trained in the art of nose surgery. What Does Rhinoplasty Fix?
The goal of rhinoplasty isn’t to create a “perfect” nose – everyone’s face has a degree of asymmetry. Rather, nose straightening surgery sets out to improve the overall balance of the nose to improve facial harmony, address functional issues, or restore a more natural appearance. Rhinoplasty can address the size and width of the nose in relation to the face, as well as the profile (projection), nose tip size, nostril shape, and general asymmetry. It can also be performed to fix a deviated septum, which can obstruct a person’s breathing.
Types of Rhinoplasty
Many different factors will be taken into consideration to determine which type of rhinoplasty procedure or nose lift is right for you. There are many variations to nose surgery when it comes to goals and techniques, as well as surgical and nonsurgical options.
- Primary rhinoplasty
- Revision (secondary) rhinoplasty
- Preservation rhinoplasty
- Ethnic rhinoplasty
- Reconstructive rhinoplasty
- Septoplasty
- Liquid rhinoplasty

Preservation Rhinoplasty FAQs
Is a rhinoplasty procedure painful?
Nose straightening surgery is generally not painful. While you may experience some soreness after the surgery, during the surgery, we will provide sedation so that you don’t feel a thing. Speak with your surgeon to learn about the measures that will be taken to keep you comfortable.
What can you not do after a nose enhancement surgery?
For most patients, the results can last for the rest of their life. Since more of the original nasal structures are maintained, there is less risk of complications like tissue or cartilage collapse. It can also make any future alterations, if necessary, much easier and more successful.
After your nose lift, it is recommended that you avoid any strenuous activities for a few weeks after surgery. You should also avoid staying out in the sun for long periods, blowing your nose, and smoking or drinking alcohol. Your surgical team can provide more information on the steps you can take to help yourself heal after surgery.
Can you blow your nose after a nose enhancement?
Blowing your nose may damage your healing because of the pressure associated with the blowing. It is recommended that you don’t blow your nose after surgery until it is cleared by your surgeon.
Can I sleep on my side after rhinoplasty surgery?
One week after your surgery, you should be able to resume sleeping on your side, as long as you keep pressure off of your nose. Your surgeon will evaluate your healing before making this determination.

Primary Rhinoplasty
What Is A Primary Rhinoplasty?
Our eyes are programmed to focus on the things that stand out the most. Since the nose is the centermost feature of the face, it’s what our eyes are typically drawn to. Primary rhinoplasty is a cosmetic treatment that aims to improve the size and shape of the nose in relation to facial harmony. “Primary” indicates that the procedure is the first nose surgery performed for individuals. When making the decision that rhinoplasty is the right choice for you, it’s important to choose a board-certified surgeon with experience in rhinoplasty procedures.
What Are the Benefits of Primary Rhinoplasty?
Primary rhinoplasty offers a variety of advantages for individuals considering nasal surgery. It is designed to help patients achieve their personal goals, whether cosmetic or functional. This procedure is often sought after for its ability to create a more balanced and pleasing appearance. Some of the most common benefits of primary rhinoplasty include:
- Refined nasal shape and contour
- Improved facial harmony
- Better nasal function
These benefits can lead to increased confidence and satisfaction with one’s overall appearance. Many patients also enjoy the lasting improvements that primary rhinoplasty can provide.
Am I A Candidate for Preservation Rhinoplasty?
Preservation rhinoplasty is usually performed for cosmetic purposes. The most common reasons include:
- Lowering the height of a nasal bump
- Enhancing your side profile
- Improving a crooked nose
- Lifting a drooping tip
- Reducing a wide tip
Not everyone is a candidate for this type of surgery, particularly people who have had rhinoplasty in the past. To determine whether preservation rhinoplasty is right for you, you should discuss your goals with a qualified plastic surgeon.
How Is Primary Rhinoplasty Performed?
The goal of primary rhinoplasty is generally to improve the appearance of the nose. Nose surgery is performed by lifting the skin from the underlying structures and then altering the bone and cartilage that make up the structure of the nose. Once the desired result has been achieved, the skin is then put back in place and the nose is left to heal. Surgeons all have their own unique techniques when it comes to performing rhinoplasty, which varies depending on the needs and goals of their patients. Some prefer to perform primary rhinoplasty by making tiny incisions inside of the nostrils and working on the underlying structures through these incisions. Others prefer a more external approach by making an incision in the columella, which gives the surgeon a clear view of the structures of the nose by lifting the entire skin envelope.
Achieve Better Facial Harmony
The results someone can expect to see from their rhinoplasty will depend on the surgeon who performs the surgery and their goals. It’s up to a plastic and reconstructive surgeon to listen to the patient’s desired outcomes and provide realistic expectations. Primary Rhinoplasty FAQs
Will my insurance cover functional nose surgery??
Although rhinoplasty for cosmetic reasons is not covered by insurance, functional rhinoplasty that is medically necessary to improve your breathing may be covered. If you may be using your insurance, please tell your surgeon in your consultation. Our office will help you submit the needed paperwork and information to your insurance to process your claim.
What about ethnic rhinoplasty?
Ethnic rhinoplasty focuses on improving the appearance of the nose while still keeping your cultural identity. This may be a concern if you are Asian, African-American, or Middle Eastern. In your consultation, you can talk about what you want to keep and what you would like to change. This will allow your surgeon to customize your treatment plan to give you the best results.
Can I combine nose surgery with other facial surgeries?
Many patients consider combining rhinoplasty with another procedure. Having multiple surgeries for a more dramatic result can be discussed during your consultation. Rhinoplasty can help make your whole face look more balanced, so you should wait to see your results before getting another procedure.
